The path opened up ahead, the trees bent back like brittle skeletons to reveal a clearing bathed in a sickly, pale light. The night sky hung lower here, the stars stared cold. Emily’s heart raced, but she kept following Whisper, who moved ahead as if none of this was out of the ordinary.
During WW2, her mother’s hard shell finally cracks, and Emily decides they have waited long enough for her father to return. In a brave spell, she sets out to find him herself and discovers something that will change her life forever.
The amber pools were lit with the same fabric as the stars, and were delicately parted with an obsidian slit that threatened to swallow the night on a whim, but for now—the dark was graciously spared and painted the folded velvet pelt that clung to the elegant limbs of the feline’s form.
Engines Overhead explores the seeds of beauty and characteristic happiness found even in the darker epochs of life. Themes of redemption, revenge, survivorship, and magical whimsy paint the backdrop of the story, pushing introspective Emily to claw for her values, even if it’s only to save her sanity in the unforgiving environment of a rural village in Norway during WW2.
The night welcomed her. It was beautiful—so much more than she'd imagined from the cabin. The sky stretched a velvet curtain, vast and black, dotted with pinpricks of stars that flickered as if caught in their own eternal fall. The clouds had gone to sleep, hiding just beyond the dome of night, waiting for daybreak to relieve it. The air rushed past her like an old friend, even if it was cool and relentless, it wrapped around her as if trying to pull her back to where it was safe and warm.
Engines Overhead is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture yet becomes relevant through universal themes. The story unfolded naturally—I simply listened and wrote what it demanded of me. What began as a simple idea for a newsletter short story soon evolved into a short novel, and before I knew it, the flood of ideas became unstoppable, leading me to write a full-length novel that holds a special place in my heart.
